Sooners Recruiting Update: First look at 2014

Written by Atlantasooner on .

Oklahoma just had a very successful first junior day with more than 25 kids visiting. OU got one verbal out of the weekend, and the Sooners appear to have jumped into the lead for possibly a half-dozen additional prospects. If OU was somewhat passive at the beginning of last year’s recruiting season in making offers, then this year OU is going all out with early offers to players.

OU’s next junior day appears to be set for Feb. 16. With big talent pools in Texas for defensive backs and linebackers and good overall talent in Oklahoma, it would not be a surprise to see a flurry of early verbals again.

The biggest concern right now in recruiting is that it’s not a great year in Texas or Oklahoma for offensive linemen, OU’s ability to land out of region OL prospects is suspect at best right now. OU needs numbers at OL and, ideally, some players like Adam Shead, Nila Kasitati and Darryl Williams who were able to be productive frontline players as redshirt freshmen.

No Mangino

Written by Allen Kenney on .

Mark Mangino

Since he got let go at Kansas in 2009, Mark Mangino has, on occasion, cut a sizable figure on the Oklahoma sideline.

The former OU offensive coordinator has hovered – quite noticeably, of course – in the background of the program during his coaching hiatus, ostensibly kicking it with his good friend Bob Stoops while collecting a rather considerable termination settlement from the Jayhawks. Of course, his appearances around the program every so often have led to idle chatter that Stoops might give the big fella his second chance after an ignominious parting with KU.

The chatter sounds a little less idle as of late. Talk among people in the know of Mangino returning to coach the offensive line has picked up steam this offseason. Oklahoma City television sports anchor Dean Blevins broke the seal on the rumors today.

National Signing Day: Ford, Byrd lead Sooners' 2013 recruiting class

Written by Allen Kenney on .

Keith Ford

Another National Signing Day in the books, another one that came and went with relatively little drama for Oklahoma.

The Sooners nabbed a late pledge from L.J. Moore, a four-star defensive back out of California, according to the Rivals recruiting service. Otherwise, it was pretty quiet around the war room in Norman.

Overall, the 2013 class certainly won't go down as one of Bob Stoops' best efforts.

Sooners Recruiting Update: Signing Day is nigh

Written by Atlantasooner on .

OU continues to take a beating at the offensive line position with Aaron Cochran, Dwayne Young, Rami Hammad all off the board with no verbals to the Sooners.

However, new names continue to appear, and OU already received a visit from George Adeosun from Alpharetta, Ga. Adeosun is the definition of a high-quality sleeper. Adeosun didn’t start as a junior, he missed the summer camp circus and his film only became available in December. He has now racked up offers from Virginia, Arizona State, Tennessee, Georgia and Georgia Tech. He just visited ASU, and assuming that he does not make a late visit next week to one of the local schools, OU appears to be in decent shape with this excellent athlete.

OU also had a visit from Josh Outlaw. OU appears to be good shape here as well. Outlaw is a big-time OL talent and could play inside or outside at tackle.

Sooners in the Super Bowl

Written by Ray Dozier on .

For the third straight year, there will be no former OU players on either Super Bowl team.

Fifty-seven Sooners have been on rosters in past Super Bowls, and 28 have earned Super Bowl rings. Twenty-five of them actually played in the big game (those listed in bold were starters):

Carl McAdams (at OU 1963-65), Linebacker, New York Jets: Made 2 tackles in Super Bowl III.

Big 12 will give you nothing on expansion, and you'll like it!

Written by Allen Kenney on .

Bob Bowlsby

During the last two days of meetings between Big 12 athletics directors, conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby offered up a study in equivocation in his discussions with members of the media on any subjects of substance. The man is a true marvel when it comes to sticking to non-commital talking points and crafting milquetoast sound bites.

Although little came from the meetings in the way of real news or forward progress, I do have a few general thoughts on what we did hear. Note that when talking about expansion, the issues tend to look different depending on the criteria you're using to evaluate them. What could be a plus in terms of postseason positioning could be a negative for the fan experience, for instance. (Which bites the big one, by the way.)

Lane Johnson turning heads at Senior Bowl

Written by Ray Dozier on .

Lane Johnson

Lane Johnson is making NFL scouts sit up and take notice at the Senior Bowl practices leading up to the all-star game Saturday.

*Reportedly, the Chicago Bears may have designs drafting him at their 20th slot in April’s draft.

*SI.com’s Chris Burke has Johnson listed as the 38th best prospect in this year's class, the only Sooner on his list.

Landry Jones looking for success on the next level

Written by Ray Dozier on .

Landry Jones

Former Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones will show off his talents to pro scouts this Saturday at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. For Jones to be successful in the NFL, he needs a team to draft him and make him learn by holding the clipboard for a few years. It would not benefit him to be drafted by a crummy team like Kansas City or Oakland where he starts from day one.

New England, Green Bay or Denver would be ideal for Mr. Jones. Josh McDaniels helped develop Tom Brady for the Patriots. Tom Clements became offensive coordinator last year for the Packers, moving up from quarterbacks coaching position. His pupil? Aaron Rodgers. Landry also could learn a lot from Peyton Manning, who would be a hell of a mentor.

Being a backup for a few years would give Landry time to hone his skills. He’s got tremendous arm strength and has proven he can complete the deep ball with some good accuracy. His best throws have been outside the numbers and into the field side. And, he does well delivering on deep outs. He has shown he can throw in between a cornerback and a safety in a cover zone. He does well in play action and executes the pump fake with his shoulders.

Playing the NFL lying game

Written by Allen Kenney on .

Tony Jefferson

The annual feeding frenzy surrounding the NFL draft serves as a petri dish for lies, rumors and innuendo. One such suspicious report about Oklahoma safety Tony Jefferson came to light Tuesday, as NFL draft site WalterFootball.com produced a thinly sourced nugget supposedly emanating from the chatter around the campfire at Senior Bowl practices:

Scouts are saying that Jefferson has been getting trashed by some of his former coaches for horrible practice habits and a lack of work ethic in the weight room.

I'm not going to pretend to have any special insight into Jefferson or his work habits. I do, however, think this alleged whisper campaign raises an interesting issue regarding transparency between OU's coaching staff and NFL scouts.
