Podcast: Phil Steele Explains Why Oklahoma Sooners Are No. 1 E-mail
Written by Allen Kenney

Guru Phil Steele blew the college football world away recently when word leaked that he was ranking the Oklahoma Sooners No. 1 in his preseason magazine. Phil graciously joins Blatant Homerism for a podcast to discuss what led him to put OU on top.

Phil and I also cover:

  • Alabama's chances of repeating;
  • the Nebraska Cornhuskers' defense without Ndamukong Suh;
  • how Texas' transition on offense affects his outlook for the Longhorns;
  • Tommy Tuberville's immediate impact on the Texas Tech Red Raiders;
  • two surprise teams in the Big 12: Oklahoma State (bad), Colorado (good).

I agree, Phil!

I think Phil is spot on. It is easy to look at the NFL draft departures from 2009 and conclude OU will struggle this coming season. Dig a little deeper and see OU didn't have many snaps from those guys last year and as a result OU developed a lot of experience in their absence. That said, I think 2011 and 2012 are the years for OU. Tons of scary, young talent that will have matured nicely by then. Nobody develops talent like Stoops.

Oh, and Landry Jones will be a very good college QB. Heupel and OU are too good at developing QBs for Jones to fail.
